Memory Challenge

We often have lists of words to learn when learning a language. Here is a list of  English words. Glance at the list and then remember as many of them as possible.

Apple, Gate, Pen, Car, Fish, Table, Cup, Jam, Forceps, Glow

Make a note of how many you remembered and where they were in the list. Most people will remember the first and the last words. Many will forget the ones in the middle.

How Did You Do?

This gives you clues as to how you can help yourself to remember words.

Can you make your lists shorter? Can you include unusual words to add to the useful words?

How can you make useful words unusual?

Might you decide never to have lists of words? If so how are you going to learn words?

Let us have your ideas as to how you succeed in learning the word you need to know. Your idea may help someone else.

KEEP IN TOUCH

"Many people are now away or are about to go. I keep in touch with students by e-mail. We use this as an opportunity to read the language they are learning. For those learning Spanish,  I write in Spanish and they can reply if they wish. Most of them do and this encourages them to use their language skills while they are away as well.

I have families learning with me and each member of the family has a task to do while on holiday.i.e ask the way to somewhere or order a meal, the task depends on their level of expertise. They will then report back to me after the break.

It all helps to make use of what is being learnt and gives a real sense of achievement. We have hundreds of people signed up for this e-zine. Where are you all going? What languages do you speak? How did speaking the language help? Did speaking the language give any amusing or embarrassing moments? Please let us know then the experiences can be shared."     Anne
