Get your Tongue Round This!

Tuesday 19th Sept - Next Spanish Evening

cassettes and CDs

Anne Taylor shares the fun in learning Finnish and why 'word power' brings families together.....

I have a son with a Finnish wife and two young children living in Finland. I  am teaching myself Finnish.  My two grandchildren will speak both English and Finnish although the family language is English.

It is not an easy language and not like the other languages I speak. I plan to learn one verb a month plus ten other words (following the power of ten from last e-zine). I hope after a year I will have learnt the most useful verbs and 120 other words. I will keep you updated on my progress each month. In the meantime I will be glad of any help!.

Can anyone translate our Finnish mushroom recipe into Finnish for fun?

bilingual speakers develop denser grey matter in their brains!

Bilingual Brainpower

I have covered this subject before, but the research is ongoing. Recent studies, including one at London 's Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience, have shown that bilingual speakers develop denser grey matter in their brains. This is especially evident on the left side of the brain, where speech and communication are handled. Again, it is an example that exercising an area of the brain can develop and improve it. Since the areas that develop are used for more than language, it's assumed that bilingual speakers get other benefits beyond the benefit of increased ability to communicate. Future studies are sure to look into this. It has also been shown that the development of these areas is greater according to how young the speaker learns a second language, but that it happens at all ages.

                                                            Happy News from http://www.doonenicething.com

This is a heart warming site to visit!   Four men, who go on holiday once a year, leaving their wives to have time with each other, were cycling in the Shetlands. On arriving at their destination one of them discovered that he had lost his wallet. Needless to say this caused consternation and a flurry of activity and phone calls. He reported the loss to the police. Two days later he had a phone call to say that his wallet had been handed in. He collected it and found that everything was there and nothing had been taken. Honesty prevails.

I often wear a pedometer to regularly check the number of steps on some days. I aim for 10,000 steps. I had reason to go to the airport [good places for walking especially if a flight is delayed] to collect someone. I visited the Ladies and 10 minutes later realised that I had left my pedometer there. I was dismayed as I thought that I had then lost it. Who, among the many people at a busy airport, would bother or be honest enough to hand it in? I returned to the ladies just in case. The cleaner was there and I immediately spotted my pedometer on her trolley as someone had handed it in to her. Again, honesty prevails!!
