alligator - the reptile - the word has Spanish origins dating back at least 500  years.Alligators were  originally called El Lagarto de Indias (The Lizard of the Indies). Initially the word entered English as lagarto in the mid-1500's, it became aligarto and then was effectively revised to allegater by Shakespeare  in Romeo and Juliet, in 1623

amateur - non-professional or un-paid,  more recently an insulting term meaning unprofessional - the word originates from Old French 'amateur' meaning 'lover', originally meaning in English a lover of an activity. The Old French word is derived from Latin 'amare' meaning 'to love'.

apple-pie bed - practical joke, with bed-sheets folded preventing the person from getting in......generally assumed to be derived from the apple-turnover pastry, but more likely from the French 'nappe pliee', meaning 'folded sheet'.

Anne interviews a local family who are learning Spanish with Languages for All...

How long have you been learning Spanish?    We have just had eight hours tuition.

What were your expectations?   We thought it would be fun but didn’t expect so many games. They are good and really help one to learn easily.

What is different to what you would normally expect?   Playing games and having fun.

What do you find particularly difficult?   That has to be putting the words into sentences but then we have only been learning for eight hours haven’t we?

What do you find the easiest?   Probably learning words as long as we write them down.

GAZPACHO-SPANISH STYLE!

Ingredientes:

Learning Tips

Let's look back to help us move forward and refresh our minds about some of the learning tips we have presented here.

1] Draw pictures. It doesn't matter how crude or silly they are as long as they mean something to you.

They are there as a visual aid to help your memory and no one else's.

2] Add colour both to your drawings and your words. Verbs may be in one colour and nouns in another.

Masculine words can be in a different colour to the feminine words. Be inventive and have fun.

3] Plan your learning however little time you may have. In fact the less time you have the more

important it is to plan it. It will add to your enjoyment and sense of achievement.

4] Have a learning buddy. It is always more encouraging to work with someone else and means that we are accountable.

5] See how many words you can think of that begin with a particular letter and gradually work your way through the alphabet.

It's a great help for vocabulary learning and we can't speak a language without words.
