MONEY MATTERS

Make The World a Better Place

Just recently Anne gave a talk to pupils in Leicester   -  “Why learn a language?” One reason is to earn more money. This idea, of course, appealed to Year 9 pupils!

I am fluent in French and secured my first PR job because of it. The North American headquarters of a French company needed a bilingual publicist for the French Canadian market. I was offered the same starting salary as the unilingual publicist for the US market, but I negotiated a higher salary for being bilingual that meant I actually earned 11% more than my unilingual colleague!

There were so many crazy aunties. There were so many old tapirs. There were so many tapirs who were aunties. There were so many aunties who were tapirs.

Bilingual Brainpower

I have covered this subject before, but the research is ongoing.  I spoke to a teacher today who had actually seen photographs of people’s brains as she was on a course in Brazil . What was clear, was that there was a significant difference in the amount of neural connections between brain cells of those who spoke another language and those who didn’t. Yes you know already. There were many more in the people who spoke more than one language. So it pays to keep learning and encourage many more people to do so to help themselves particularly as we approach the European day of languages on September 26th http://www.IncreaseBrainPower.com/learn-a-language.html.

I found an interesting site for authentic Spanish recipes -  www.xmission.com. It is a good way to practice your Spanish and they are genuine recipes from real people!

Learning Tips

Sleep on it .Research shows that we can help our memory by reviewing what we have learnt during the day. Simply read over what you have learnt or read be it two or ten words, go to sleep, read over them again in the morning and note how you improve.

Down time. Take your words to learn with you wherever you go out and use the time when you have to wait for people, are in the dentist’s waiting room, or waiting for any other important meeting. You will be amazed at how easy this makes the learning as you incorporate it into your life and don’t feel the need to sit down for long periods of study

Happy News  This week we honour an anonymous man in Wisconsin who helped our member Amy when she was in a bind.

"Our town has a drop-off area for yard waste and recyclable items. I went there today to drop off our household's weekly accumulation, and when I got back into my car, it wouldn't start. I asked the yard attendant if he knew anything about cars, and soon he and two other complete strangers came to help me jump-start my car's battery. No use: it was dead.

Then the wonderful attendant took the battery out of his truck and put it in my car. I drove to an auto parts store, bought a new battery and then he even put it in my car for me! I cannot believe how wonderful some people really, truly are, and I just hope that if I have the chance to do something this nice, that I will do it without question as it was done for me."
